Making time to make.
I'm Judith, the maker behind Every Second Friday.
For almost twenty years I've worked as an architect, designing places for people to live and work. Alongside my career, sewing has always been the creative outlet I've returned to. It is a way to slow down, solve problems with my hands and create something both beautiful and practical.
Over the years I've explored everything from garment making and tailoring to pattern cutting, home furnishings and bag making. I love understanding how things are constructed, refining techniques and choosing materials that are made to last. Every project begins as an idea, refined through sketching, prototyping and countless iterations before becoming a pattern that is both enjoyable to sew and practical to use.
It's the same thoughtful approach that has shaped both my career in architecture and my sewing.
The name Every Second Friday grew from a small adjustment to my working week. When my practice introduced a nine-day fortnight, every second Friday became a day without meetings, deadlines or responsibility to anyone else. It became time to explore the parts of making I loved most. It allowed me scope to experiment, learn new skills and simply enjoy the process of creating.
That time reminded me how important it is to protect space for creativity. Life is busy, and making is often the first thing to disappear. I wanted Every Second Friday to encourage others to carve out that time too: to step away from everyday demands, learn something new and rediscover the satisfaction of making something with their own hands.
After training as a sewing teacher with Lydia at Made My Wardrobe, I created Every Second Friday to share projects that are carefully designed, practical and enjoyable to make. Whether you join a workshop, sew one of my projects at home or pick up one of my kits, my hope is that you'll gain confidence, learn lasting skills and create something you'll genuinely enjoy using.
